Carrie Underwood Opens Up About Miscarriages

Country music star Carrie Underwood revealed Sunday that she suffered three miscarriages in 2017 and 2018, an emotional experience that helped inspire her to write music for her new album.

“I’d kind of planned that 2017 was, you know, going to be the year that I work on new music, and I have a baby,” Underwood said on CBS’ “Sunday Morning.” “We got pregnant early 2017, and didn’t work out.”

Underwood said she experienced a second miscarriage in 2017; and a third in early 2018. After the third loss, she said “it was just kind of like, ‘OK, like, what’s the deal?’

“I have this amazing life. Like, really, what can I complain about? I can’t,” she said. “I have an incredible husband, incredible friends, an incredible job, an incredible kid. Can I be mad? No. And I got mad.”

Underwood, who is now pregnant with her second child, added that sometimes it would be very painful to try to put on a good face while she was mourning.

″’Cause I would literally have these horrible things going on in my life, and then have to go smile and, like, do some interviews or, like, do a photo shoot or something, you know?”

The silver lining? The emotional journey helped fuel her songwriting for her new album “Cry Pretty.”

“And throughout the whole process, you know, I’m writing and, like, literally right after finding out that I would lose a baby, I’d have a writing session, I’d be like, ‘Let’s go. You know, I can’t just sit around thinking about this. Like, I wanna work, I wanna do this,’” Underwood said.
